Factory Extension Completed

At SCC we provided full MEP services for RIBA Stages 1-7 for Mallon Foods based in Monaghan.  This project was for an extension to their current factory and operations.  As well as expanding, the key focus for the client was to improve overall efficiency of the site and reduce their costs and CO2 Emissions. This project was suitable for various government grants including PV capital support & capital support for energy metering.

Given the substantial energy required to cool extensive factory and food processing areas, the building's energy consumption was significantly high. We carried out an audit of the buildings current energy usage and identified the key areas that had high costs and emissions.  The main area that energy usage was extremely high was keeping the building to the required temperature for manufacturing their product in a sterile environment.   A notable by-product of this high cooling demand is waste heat. To harness this energy, we proposed a system that captures waste heat from the refrigeration plant and stores it in a 20,000-litre buffer tank. The stored water would be repurposed as a pre-heated water supply for the post-production wash down process, which was typically scheduled at the end of each production day. Thus, the waste heat accumulated during the day will be recycled in the evening or at night for the wash down process, converting what was once a wasted resource into an asset.

We provided budget costs based on all our recommendations to the client and since our initial audit and feasibility this has now been fully installed on site and is operational.  The factory  should see a significant reduction in their energy overheads.  A smart BMS will be installed on site which will allow the client better monitoring of systems and record vital KPIs for CO2 reduction and costs savings.
